Claude (Anthropic) doesn't answer web questions through Google or Bing — it uses Brave Search, officially listed as a subprocessor since March 2025. Your ranking in the Brave index directly determines whether Claude cites your business. This is its own channel with its own rules, not a side effect of good Google or Bing SEO.
Most businesses optimize for ChatGPT (Bing-based) and Google AI Overviews — and overlook Claude entirely, assuming good SEO carries over everywhere. It doesn't: independent measurements (Profound) show only about 34% overlap between Claude citations and the Google top 10, but 79–87% overlap with the Brave top 10. If you're not visible in Brave, you're effectively invisible to Claude — no matter how well your site ranks on Google.
7 Steps to Get Visible in Claude
- Step 1: Confirm the technical baseline
Brave doesn't have a separate crawler name to allow in robots.txt — Brave crawls a page if Googlebot can crawl it too. Check: no Googlebot disallow, full server-side rendering, stable 200 responses, a valid sitemap.xml. - Step 2: Check your current Brave standing
Search site:yourdomain.com on search.brave.com to see whether and how many of your pages are indexed at all. Then check 5–10 target queries in English: where do you rank? That is your baseline. - Step 3: Add freshness signals
Claude often appends the current year to its own search queries ("best X 2026"). Pages with a visible year in the title/H1 and a genuine, recent last-updated date get preferential consideration for exactly those queries. - Step 4: Structure content for extraction
Claude picks the most citable option from the Brave pool: a clear answer in the first third of the page, wording close to the actual query, concrete numbers with sources instead of marketing language. - Step 5: Build real WDP signals
Brave primarily discovers new and relevant pages through actual traffic from Brave browser users (Web Discovery Project) — there is no webmaster console to submit to, because none exists. Distribute content where that audience actually is: Reddit, Hacker News, tech and industry communities. - Step 6: Show up in Discussions-relevant threads
For many queries, Brave surfaces a dedicated "Discussions" block pulled from forums (mainly Reddit). Genuine, helpful mentions of your business in those threads can land you in that block — independent of your organic ranking. - Step 7: Check Brave ranking against Claude citation monthly
Ask Claude the same target questions you checked in Brave (at least 3 runs per question, since output is non-deterministic). This tells you directly whether a good Brave position actually converts into a Claude citation — or whether the page still has an extractability problem.
Why Claude Works Differently from ChatGPT and Gemini
| Aspect | Claude | ChatGPT / Google AIO |
|---|---|---|
| Web index | Brave Search (independent) | Bing (ChatGPT) / Google index (AIO) |
| Licensing deals with platforms | None — every site competes on equal terms | Some exist (e.g. Reddit deals) |
| How often does it actually search live? | ~36.6% of prompts | ChatGPT: ~90% of prompts |
| Webmaster tools | None — just crawlability + real user traffic | Bing Webmaster Tools / Google Search Console |
When Does Claude Actually Search the Web?
Not every prompt to Claude triggers a web search. Specific signals in the phrasing make it much more likely — and these are exactly the query types your content should target:
| Signal in the query | Trigger likelihood | Content implication |
|---|---|---|
| Recency ("best X 2026") | ~81% | Year in title/H1, visible update date |
| Ranking ("top…", "…ranked") | ~67% | Listicles with a transparent methodology |
| Location ("…in Chicago") | ~55% | Local answer pages, city in the H1 |
| Comparison ("X vs Y") | high | Comparison pages/hubs |
| Definition questions ("what is X") | low — Claude often answers from memory | Brave won't help here — Wikipedia/authority signals do |
The Biggest Misconception: "I'll Just Submit My URL to Brave"
Unlike many search consoles, Brave has no form to submit a new page for indexing. The official Brave Search Crawler page describes exactly two functions: re-fetching a page after a noindex change (i.e. to delist it) and reporting URLs that no longer exist. The real way into the index is two things: crawlability (see Step 1) and real traffic from Brave browser users through the Web Discovery Project (WDP) — an opt-in system that anonymously records which pages real people actually visit.
That also means: artificially generating WDP signals (bot traffic, IP rotation) is protected against by design and should never be attempted or recommended to clients. The only reliable lever is organic distribution in channels with a real Brave user base — Reddit, Hacker News, tech and privacy-focused communities.
How to Track Progress
- Indexing:
site:yourdomain.comon search.brave.com — monthly - Ranking: 5–10 target queries in English, top 10 is the goal
- Conversion into Claude: Ask the same questions in Claude 3 times — is your page actually cited?
- Referral traffic: Shows up in Google Analytics as a
search.brave.comreferrer (small numbers, but a leading indicator)
